Alumni Spotlights 2012

My interest in the field of student affairs and higher education began when I was in high school but was not fully materialized until I began working as a University Advisor after I had graduated from UC Irvine. My college career can be described as one with many different challenges where I had also experimented with many different academic learning paths. Eventually, I would find my way back to counseling and student affairs, and I am extremely excited to be a part of the School of Education’s Student Affairs team.

Originally from Bakersfield, California, and having entertained dreams of becoming a counselor or psychologist in a school setting, I was admitted into the University of California, Irvine as a major in Psychology and Social Behavior.

Upon arriving to UCI, I was instantly immersed into a student life where I fully embraced my education and expanded my interests into other majors including Criminology, Law, and Society and Urban and Regional Planning. Fascinated by UCI’s immense offerings of various academic programs, I wanted to learn as much as possible during my time as a student. Beyond my diverse education, my experience as a student was truly memorable where I had the pleasure of being employed by ASUCI and the Anteater Recreation Center, and being a part of various on-campus clubs and organizations.

Upon graduating from UCI, my career took a slight diversion as I entered into an internship opportunity with the City of Irvine working for their Environmental Programs Department. I had the opportunity to work on some very fulfilling projects including the city’s Climate Action Plan that will greatly reduce carbon emissions citywide. Working with the city expanded my skill set in policy work, report writing, and data management. This experience also fostered my commitment to sustainability and environmentalism.

Although I had enjoyed working on various projects that are sure to positively impact the city in many ways, it became clear to me that I wanted to help others in a manner that was more direct, focalized, and personable. Reverting back to my original goals to go into counseling, I accepted a position working as an advisor for a private university where I provided student services support to students at various levels in their academic journey, including a diverse population of education students who were in candidacy in obtaining their state teaching credentials (Single Subject, Multiple Subject, and Administrative Services credentials). The most inspiring aspect about this position was witnessing students graduate and achieve their academic and career goals.

Having always had the desire to work for my alma mater, I recently accepted a position as a Student Affairs Officer with UCI’s School of Education where I will be taking my skills and experience in student affairs to a reputable school that is highly regarded in the California public school system. I am very excited about this position as I have the opportunity to have a direct and positive influence on students who are trying to establish their career in education.

During my free time, I regularly enjoy staying active by playing sports (basketball and tennis), going to the gym, and partaking in outdoor activities. I also enjoy immersing myself in the musical arts and play the guitar, bass, and violin. I am an avid dog lover and have a wonderful miniature dachshund named Bailey.
