We Are All Hokies, We Will Prevail

April 16 marks the 5 year anniversary of the tragic school shootings at Virginia Tech. In two separate attacks, approximately two hours apart, the perpetrator, Seung-Hui Cho killed 32 people and wounded 25 others before committing suicide. The events of April 16, 2007 are the deadliest shooting incident by a single gunman in U.S. history and the worst act of mass murder on college students. http://www.weremember.vt.edu/index.html

Often referred to as the 9/11 for higher education, college campuses across the country learned a number of lessons from the events at Virginia Tech. Here are the University of California, Irvine, a number of projects were initiated to ensure the safety and security of our students, faculty, and staff.

  • We now have Zotalert, our campus emergency alert system, to ensure timely notification of emergency and safety related information. Sign up here http://www.oit.uci.edu/zotalert/
  • The UC Irvine police department offers workplace violence and active shooter training and will complete office security assessments for departments on campus http://www.police.uci.edu 
  • Campus leadership expanded the multi-disciplinary consultation team to address crisis management issues and concerns regarding distressed students, faculty, and staff
  • The “See Something, Say Something” campaign was created to identify troubled students, faculty, and staff and begin early intervention http://www.chs.uci.edu/PDFforweb.pdf
