EMIG is offering a First Responder Course focused on teaching you skills that are useful in real-life, as well as in the hospital. We are focusing specifically on skills that are not otherwise focused on in medical school, but we are still expected to know as medical professionals. Topics were chosen using feedback from MS3/4s on what they wish they had been taught in the first two years. The goal of this program is to make you as confident in the pre-hospital setting as possible, as soon as possible. This course is designed for EVERYONE in medical school and will focus on skills we feel are vital for your success on all rotations and in real life, it is NOT just for those interested in EM.
We will be covering a wide range of topics including…
- ABC’s (I’m sure you’ve heard SIM preceptors talk about this a little)
- Airway placement and oxygen use
- Wound cleaning and management
- IVs/Injections/Tubing
- Syncope, Seizures, and Allergic Reactions
This will be a 9 to 10 session course with a culminating/hands-on simulation practical in the great outdoors (not the sim center). We will be keeping an eye on COVID precautions, but hope that most sessions will be able to be held in person. This will be an open course for everyone and those of you going for EMIG credit, these classes will count toward the EMIG Milestones Elective.
