Graduate Advising

I am currently accepting prospective MA and PhD students studying the social and cultural history of modern China. I am particularly attentive to applications that place the student’s research in a global context and show an interest in engaging with different world regions, actors, or ideas.

Some of my present and former graduate students have researched the following topics:

    • The history of birth control in twentieth-century China
    • Children and childhood in wartime China
    • Metrology and the standardization of weights and measures
    • The fate of Confucianism in post-1949 China and Taiwan
    • Environment and pollution in Gansu
    • Anti-snail fever campaigns in Guangdong
    • Factionalism in the Democracy Wall movement
    • Competing colonialisms in Tianjin and Shanghai
