You’re Invited – Poetry of Hope and Healing – Feb 26

The goal of the 4th Annual Symposium of Hope and Healing is to explore the power of poetry to provide insight, hope and healing. However, these words can mean very different things to different people, depending on their diverse backgrounds and life experiences. This year we will examine how different perspectives interpret the Intersections of race, ethnicity, hope and healing through poetry. The event features keynote speakers Thelma Reyna, PhD, award-winning writer who served as Poet Laureate of the city of Altadena; and Candice Taylor, MD, associate clinical professor of pediatrics and co-director of Leadership Education to Advance Diversity for African, Black and Caribbean communities (LEAD-ABC) in the UCI School of Medicine, and Associate Program Director for the UCI/CHOC pediatric residency program. The session will also present poetry readings from 5 other poets as well as commentary by Jayne Lewis, UCI professor of English. We hope a broad audience of students, faculty, and community members will be interested in attending.

CoSponsors: UC Irvine School of Medicine, UC Irvine Institute of Clinical Translational Science, UCI Center for Medical Humanities, UCI SoM Program in Medical Humanities & Arts, and the Laguna Poets Workshop
