California and National Graduation Rates in Public and Private Universities

Here we present a few graduation rates from the comprehensive survey by the Chronicle of Higher Education.

Comparing California with national graduation rates for public universities:  CA graduates 35% in 4 years while the US graduates 31% in 4 years; CA graduates in 6 years 65% while the US average for 6 years is 56%.  Other states do better, most do worse.

As we presented in the previous post, UC Irvine graduated 68% in 4 years and 83% in five years, way above the state and national averages for public universities.

Among private universities: CA graduates 61% in 4 years compared to the US average of 53% in 4 years;  CA graduates 73% in 6 years compared to the US average of 66% in 6 years.

We now present a camparison with the power elite most selective universities in the Northeast, with the presumably most talented students plus legacies.  Princeton’s 4 year graduation rate is 90% and its 6 year rate is 96%.  Yale’s 4 year graduation rate is 89% and 6 year is 96%.  Harvard’s 4 year rate is 87% and 6 year rate is 97%.
