Clinton Wins the Puerto Rican Primary

Clinton Wins the Puerto Rican Primary

The results are preliminary estimates, since the vote counting won’t be finished until Tuesday.  Clinton has cleanly won the Puerto Rican Primary on June 5 with 59% of the vote to Sanders 38%. This has earned her a 3 to 2 split to weight the district delegate selection, and the at large and PLEO delegates. So of the 60 pledged delegates, Clinton gets 36, and Sanders gets 24. There are 7 Superdelegates, which are now all pledged to Clinton. 40 of the delegates were district delegates, 13 are at-large, and 7 are PLEOs. All are distributed proportionately.

On June 4, the Virgin Islands primary gave 6 pledged delegates to Clinton, and 1 to Sanders. They also have 5 Superdelegates, 2 of which went to Clinton.

So the total Clinton gain in pledged delegates over the weekend is 42, and for Sanders, 25.

One wonders what an increase in Democratic voters might result if polls were open on both Saturdays and Sundays, so that they did not interfere with most people’s work days. Both Saturday and Sunday would cover religious Sabbaths, and give voting opportunities to those that had to work on one weekend day.
