“JUST Capital” Report on Industries and Environmentalism

JUST Capital is a non-profit research group that surveys industries and employees on their attitudes and actions on Justice in various fields, including the environment.  justcapital.com.

In a survey of what makes up just business behavior, the prioritized issues were:  Workers, 25%; Customers, 18%; Products, 14%; Environment, 13%; Jobs, 12%; Communities, 11%; and Leadership and Shareholders, 8%.

In the Environment 13%, the concerns were polled as:  Has policies and practices to protect the environment, 36%; Uses natural resources efficiently and reduces waste, 35%; and Minimizes pollution, 29%.  Since these seem to be scrambled up, its only indicative.

Just behaviors by various sectors follows (quoted):

76% of working Americans said that when considering accepting a job, they would opt to work at a more just company, even if paid less.  The majority of working Americans say they would accept 20% less pay.  (I work among such people at the University.)

63% of people think that CEOs of large companies have a responsibility to take a stand on important social issues.

79% of Americans believe that people can be effective when they work together to change companies behavior.

78% said that they had taken action to show their support for a company’s positive behavior.

I scanned their ranking of companies under the environmental filter, and found the first oil company at #283 Phillips 66, which was ranked 130th overall.  #286 was Antero Resources, also oil and gas, which was 128th overall.  #298 was Whiting Petroleum, number 419 overall.  #300 was Cabot Oil and Gas, 701st overall.  #600 was Valero Energy, which was 237th overall.  I am not expressing any opinion here, just reporting on a website.  Scores were not provided to really judge, and rankings can be very misleading.

The concern with the environment among companies, their workers, and the public has been and will continue to be a major source of climate action.
