This course explores learning and development through a cultural lens. By integrating developmental, educational, and anthropological research traditions, students learn to broaden how they understand children’s normative cognitive and social-emotional development and the role culture practices play in shaping children’s experiences and interactions.
Because many students who enroll in this course plan on becoming teachers, this course provides students with a strong theoretical foundation for understanding the complexity of children’s development as it is situated within broader cultural contexts, as well as schooling contexts in which teachers and children are situated.
