This undergraduate course overviews digital literacies, or what is often referred to as 21st-century literacy skills. These skills include the ability to communicate, collaborate with others, critically evaluate sources of information, and think creatively. Through various readings and assignments, students learn to situate the importance of 21st-century literacy skills within recent developments in digital technologies, such as cloud-based collaborative tools. Students also reflect on the pros and cons of using digital technologies in schools and consider ways to promote 21st-century literacy skills in the classroom.
Students also apply these 21st-century literacy skills by working on long-term group projects. These projects require students to produce digital content, such as a microblog, an e-Zine (electronic magazine) article, short videos, and a longer-format digital storytelling video, in which they convey information, ideas, and opinions to a broader audience.
