The COIL Initiative (Collaborative Online International Learning) provides rich learning experiences to promote intercultural dialog between American and Japanese college students. As part of my undergraduate courses (ED 10, ED 30, ED 146), students work on joint assignments and exchange ideas with students at International Christian University (ICU) and the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS) in Japan. The COIL Initiative also funds a handful of undergraduate students to travel with me to Japan where they connect with students from ICU and TUFS and learn about the Japanese education system through firsthand experiences.
Funded by the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo and Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT), the COIL initiative helps promote cross-cultural appreciation and understanding between American and Japanese university students. You can find more information about the program here and here.
