How can we bring the world together through science?

Who We Are

Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) is a federally funded program designed to elevate the academic achievement, college attendance, and graduation rates of first-generation, low-income, underrepresented, and underserved students.

Summer Program 2019

This year, Gear Up worked collaboratively with eight of Compton’s middle and k-8 schools to
host a 4-week STEAM enrichment program. Teachers from Compton Unified School District
were tasked to create a project centered around a common theme: using science and
technology to highlight issues that are relevant to the world and community that surrounds
their students.

Examples of projects include:

  • Using film equipment to create a “disaster film” of the consequences of rising global
    temperatures.
  • Analyzing Compton as a food dessert to create a fictional restaurant that had to include:
a menu of foods typically not seen in their community, employee salaries, floor plans
    and an interior design.
  • Researching health issues facing their community (obesity, chromium-6 in tap water,
etc.) and proposing solutions to combat these issues.

Student participants also had the opportunity to join three academic field trips:

  • Jet Propulsion Laboratory/NASA in Pasadena, CA
  • UC Irvine in Irvine, CA
  • Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, CA
