Stephanie Salvador, Biotechnology

Hi hi everyone! My name is Stephanie. I received my B.S. in Biochemistry at Cal State Fullerton and currently a first year graduate student at UCI! When I am not in class or studying,
I love to go hiking, shopping, or watch an episode of Star Wars or anime. I wanted to become a mentor because in my experiences, entering the STEM field was not an easy task. I hope that my guidance can help young individuals navigate that process and hopefully find their passion/interests!

Gianella Campos, Chemical Engineering

Hey everyone! I’m Gianella and some of my favorite hobbies are listening to music, any kind, I’m not too picky, as well as watching cartoons, especially kind of older ones(Gravity Falls/Over The Garden Wall/Courage the Cowardly Dog). In terms of interests, I really like to learn more about art in my free time, either general history of art periods or new techniques for painting and drawing. As for the reason I became a mentor, I’ve always really enjoy being a helping hand to others. More specifically though, it’s because STEM has so much of a reputation and I want to help younger generations understand what they can expect from pursuing STEM in college, and overall make them feel confident that can pursue STEM phenomenally.

Vanessa Saldivar, Biological Sciences

Hello! My name is Vanessa and I transferred from community college to UCI in Fall 2021 as a BioSci major. I joined the Minority Science Program at UCI during the summer, which helped me get involved in research. Since then, I have gained an interest in research, and my goal is to pursue a Ph.D. after receiving my Bachelor’s. In addition, due to the area of my research experience, I am looking forward to focusing on Biochemistry and Molecular Biology for my undergraduate degree.
Furthermore, I have an interest in Ecology and learning about nature. I love learning about marine mammals, birds, butterflies, ants, and many other animals! Besides being in nature, my hobbies include painting, reading contemporary fiction books, and scrolling through Pinterest for outfit inspirations!
I became a mentor because I look forward to sharing my experiences with others that I wish I could have known earlier. Prior to coming to UCI, I had no idea what types of careers existed in the field of Biology, and I often felt anxious about the steps I should be taking to succeed. By being a mentor, I hope to ease any doubts and offer knowledge that I have learned along my journey in STEM.
