Past Projects

Voices of Family Medicine Photo-narrative Project

Our 2022 project, “Voices of Family Medicine Photo-narrative Project”, was a collaborative effort with the UCI Family Health Center in Santa Ana. We aimed to showcase the diverse array of services provided in family medicine through documentation of day-to-day patient-physician interactions. Student volunteers interviewed and photographed physicians and their patients, which were then combined into a photo journal to create a cohesive picture of what family medicine is. The photo narratives are currently on display at the Santa Ana Family Health Center.

Intergenerational Photo-narrative Project

Throughout the 2020-21 school year, HtH has focused on its Intergenerational Photo-narrative Project, formerly known as the Geriatric Kindness & Humanism Project. Funded by the UCI Dalai Lama Scholarship, this project virtually connected undergraduate students with retirees and hospice patients from Regents Point and Vitas Healthcare respectively.

Photos and narratives were written by a select number of volunteers. These were integrated into our newest edition of The Scribe, our undergraduate journal.

Family Medicine COVID-19 Research Project

Beginning in the Summer of 2020, this project, geared towards both quantitative and qualitative research, is a joint undertaking between family physicians, UCI School of Medicine associates, UCI medical students, and UCI undergraduates. The goal is to better understand the lives, concerns, and attitudes of current residents and attendings working in family medicine amidst this pandemic.

We have received data from countless healthcare professionals and have since completed the interviewing stage of the FM COVID-19 Project. A qualitative research paper, based on the interviews with family medicine residents and attendings, has already been submitted to a journal. A quantitative research paper has already been drafted.

Humans of Santa Ana

The Humans of Santa Ana (HOSA) Project was a tremendous joint task between current & former UC Irvine undergraduates part of the Healing Through Humanities club, as well as associates/family physicians at the UC Irvine Family Health Center in Santa Ana. HOSA was a photojournalism project with the intent of creating a welcoming, community-based environment within the health clinic by presenting the portraits and narratives of patients and family physicians affiliated with the health center. The photographs and stories that define each individual stem from interviews conducted during their visit or down-time.

The photographs you see below showcase a few of the portraits and their narratives, as well as the team involved in making this large project come into reality during the opening exhibition/symposium. The portraits and narratives are to decorate the countless walls of the clinic, spreading life, connection, and human stories to surround the physicians during their daily work and patients interested in learning about the fascinating members that make up their community.

The project began in the Fall of 2019 and was showcased on January 27th, 2020.

Mural Project

Through the past few years, we’ve collaborated with UCI medical students to paint canvas murals with patients at various clinics. The purpose of this project was two-fold: to share the healing effects of art and contribute to the beautification of the health facilities. Medical students, attending physicians, and clinic staff members also participated in this project. The finished pieces were displayed in various clinics, including the UCI Family Health Center, UCI Medical Center, and various free clinics in Orange County.
