Each spring the Department of History convenes an Undergraduate History Conference and welcomes student presentations from across the university. This year we were unable to hold the annual conference due to the coronavirus. In its place, we offered students the opportunity to submit their written work for review as well as online publication in the first UCI History Undergraduate Research Journal. We received submissions on topics ranging across temporal, thematic, and geographic areas, including women in the Irish nationalist struggle, the racial politics of the video game industry, and the professed masculinity of white American bear hunters in territorial Alaska. These essays showcase some of the best historical research accomplished by UCI undergraduates during the 2019-2020 academic year. We congratulate them for their accomplishments and we hope you enjoy the essays!
