Including intellectual foci that span from global cultural and historical studies to languages, literature and media to philosophy and critical theory, the School of Humanities’ graduate programs in literary criticism & theory, English and history are among the top-ranked public programs in the nation by U.S. News and World Report.
The Communications team within the school is responsible for all inward and public-facing communications, including the website, social media platforms and physical marketing campaigns (such as the banners and window decals within the humanities).
Project Specifications (NOTE: The deadline for this position is Friday, 5/5)
Research Communications
The Communications Fellow will lead the research and creation of public-facing humanities-driven communications on three primary topics: data-driven student success, climate change and health. This will involve:
- Researching, pitching and developing story ideas pertaining to these topics, and in conversation with key academic leaders. While some stories might be developed for the website, much of this work will lead to a social media campaign launched in the upcoming academic year.
- Conducting interview-based research to support the development of written and video materials.
- Develop multi-modal content (video, audio, visual materials) to accompany story ideas.
Alumni Profiles
The Communications Fellow will lead on developing a database of alumni profiles and build out the Alumni section of the SoH website. The fellow will develop a strategic communications plan for showcasing alumni experiences in the SoH newsletter and social media platforms. Building alumni profiles is also an opportunity for the fellow to conduct their own career development research.
Desired Qualifications
The Communications team is looking for an intellectually curious PhD student who is exceptionally skilled at researching and writing. Ideally this should apply to all PhD students (!!) so we’ll narrow the scope by asking that candidates be:
- Interested in topics concerning data-driven student success, climate change and/or health;
- Comfortable working with data sets and using them to craft narrative-based stories;
- Experienced and/or very interested in telling stories on social media utilizing words, images and video;
- Intrigued by the idea of strategic communications, and would like to help further the reach of humanities impact stories.
What You Can Expect from Us
In addition to hands-on experience working on the above, we offer:
- The opportunity to work as part of a team and engage in lively collaborations with faculty and staff. We have fun. And work hard.
- The opportunity to expand (and/or develop) a communications portfolio that includes short written pieces, video and social media engagements.
- Mentorship from an experienced supervisor who understands the benefits (and limitations) of doctoral training as well as the kind of professional development opportunities critical to support post-PhD professional trajectories.[1]
