Infrastructure investments have historically divided and disenfranchised Black communities and other marginalized communities of color in the United States. The Infrastructure Equity (IE) faculty cluster hiring program amplifies UC Irvine’s Black Thriving Initiative by recruiting four engaged scholars across the fields of planning, policy, engineering, environmental science, and law to address social, environmental, and racial disparities in infrastructure planning, design, and implementation. The initiative includes the UC Irvine Department of Urban Planning and Public Policy, Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, Department of Earth System Science, and School of Law. The cluster’s curriculum and programming components foster cross-campus collaborations, build a community of scholars trained in community-based research, and engage with community organizations and governmental agencies in Black communities in Southern California and beyond.
