iMedEd Release Notes Version 09.18.15

UC Irvine Health contributes to the Touch Surgery App

Dr. Shannon Toohey, a Multimedia Design Education Technology Fellow in the Department of Emergency Medicine and a key addition to the iMedEd team, has authored three modules (Lumbar Puncture, IJ Central line placement and Paracentesis) in the Touch Surgery app by Kinosis. Touch Surgery is a mobile app (iOS, Android) that uses high quality animations to simulate step-by-step instructions for operations and procedures. It is based on the idea that pre-training with these interactive simulations will allow residents to have a better understanding of those procedures when they practice them. “Cognitive decision-making should be mastered before you attempt the manual parts of an operation. At Touch Surgery, we believe the decision comes before the incision.” ~ Touch Surgery.

Dr. Toohey shares that “It’s been a great experience, acting as the subject matter expert with an amazing team of animators creating high quality learning modules. I’m excited about offering these training modules to our residents and think its an exciting example of a great use of technology in medical education”. We are excited to announce that Dr. Toohey’s Lumbar Puncture module is available now in the Touch Surgery app which is free for download in the Apple App Store and the Google Play store. The Touch Surgery app offers a growing library of simulation modules on many specialities including Orthopedics, Neurosurgery and Breast so we encourage you to explore it for other surgery resources as well.
