Point-of-care Ultrasound: Anytime, Anywhere

The White Coat Ceremony for the incoming Class of 2023 was held on Aug. 9, 2019 at the Barclay Theater. During this ceremony, the incoming medical students became the first in the nation to receive their own personal Butterfly iQ hand-held ultrasound devices. These devices will serve as a central component to our well-established, longitudinal ultrasound curriculum led by Dr. J. Christian Fox, chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine. The ultrasound curriculum has been offered to UCI medical students for nearly a decade, and this year began on the first day of classes, Aug. 12, 2019, with an introduction to the Butterfly iQ ultrasounds led by Dr. Fox and Dr. Warren Wiechmann.

UCI School of Medicine requires medical students to have their own personal iPad to use throughout their tenure in the program. Through the iMedEd initiative, the school provides assistance to ensure each student has access to an iPad device. As an iPad or iPhone is a necessary complement to the portable Butterfly iQ ultrasounds, our students are now equipped to perform whole-body scanning anytime, anywhere, providing them with novel learning opportunities as they prepare to become the next generation of doctors.
