Observation and Forces:
I selected the vicinity around my workplace in Irvine, Ca for my study. My office building is right across Irvine Spectrum Center.
Forces:

Description of Forces:
Restaurants: Irvine Spectrum offers a variety of restaurants both fine dining and retail chains.
Entertainment: Irvine Spectrum has a bounty of entertainment varieties for people of all ages. Edwards Cinemas, Improve, Dave and Busters, Carousel, Giant Wheel and a mini train are a few to mention.
Retail: Famous for its Southern California out door shopping arena, Irvine Spectrum offers wide range of retailers like private booth stalls to large ones like Nordstrom.
Parking Structure: Irvine Spectrum has a number of parking structures conveniently located for its visitors. However the recent addition of Valet parking structure is a state of the art valet with elegant seating arrangements.
People: The outdoor breeze with aromas of variety of Cuisines and convenient walkways bring plethora of people to the Irvine Spectrum, bustling their way to through the muses.
Mapping my Forces:

Thanks for the map submission Meghna. As others have mentioned, it’s a nice color scheme, in fact it has to be one of the more calming color schemes of any map I’ve encountered. I’m curious whether this is a calming place to you or if there is another reason you made these selections? Also, it’d be nice to push it a little further and see a mapping of something that isn’t traditionally found on a mall map or that isn’t located in a physical structure–feel free to get playful or personal!
Meghna, Nice work. Good color scheme, though I agree with the comment on the use of white for the walking paths. you might want to consider a 2.0 version! 🙂 Also, it would be interesting to see if the parking volume was concentrated in certain lots and/or areas of the lots. that might indicate a preferred area of the mall. Just food for thought.
Meghna, I am having a hard time seeing the maps of the forces individually. The map should be more zoomed in so we can get a better view of the outline of the forces. With the satellite view, there is a lot of colors so I am not able to make discern it from the color you chose for the particular force. The map with all 5 forces is fantastic though! I love the use of the pastel colors as it makes it easy on the eyes. I am not sure what the light grey or the light purple parts represent though. Consider adding those colors to the legend?
P.S. great choice in choosing the Irvine Spectrum. I choose a similar place (the Outlets in Orange aka the Block).
Hi Meghna!
I love Irvine Spectrum! Great choice. As others have said, you made a beautiful, clear, and simple looking map. Very easy on the eyes and easy to read. However, I’m not sure I understand the color choices for your legend. As Talha mentioned already, using white to delineate your walking force is confusing since it looks like it is part of the white space around the Irvine Spectrum. While it is understandably difficult to assign your forces a symbolically relevant color, perhaps use of symbols or patterns would be more relevant?
Oops I see that Devon also noticed the use of white as confusing.
Meghna, this is one of the cleanest final maps that I’ve nice, very nice job on that. I would really like to see the five force maps larger though to get a sense of each of them on their own; perhaps you were conserving serve space ;). But other than that, I really like it, the colors go well with each other and give an overall soft feel to the map. Nice job!

Nice small measurement detail on the bottom left to give a sense of scale for the Spectrum! Even though you don’t have any extra labels (other than your 5 forces), the map is really easy to understand. One small suggestion though. “Walking path” is correlated with white, which makes sense inside the Spectrum. However, your map suggests that the area outside the Spectrum is fully walkable too. Maybe add an extra light color around the Spectrum to help distinguish walking areas from the outside (which are the freeways right?)?
Wow! Gorgeous final map! I would consider using different colors for your map’s background and pathing, since they both are white and blend into one another. I would also consider clarifying what the tan color means in your key.
We have the same site of observation! It is very interesting to see how forces in the day time are different from night time. I noticed you focused a lot of visual style presentations of a force, which is something very different from my because during the night time those objects were not very clear, my focus were then all about people’s interactions and activities.
Curious to see more descriptions of each force, how they relate to each other, and how they could be relevant to you when taking those photos. Maybe the information will help you to layout the foundation for Part 2 exercise?
Thanks for your great feedback Debra. I do have my forces updated now. I would be curious to compare our mappings since we have the same location for our sites.
