  1. Dear Paul,

Thank you for this wonderful piece. I noticed that you were trying to employ separate strategies for different scales of architecture. For instance, utilizing the ‘intensity’ instead of relying on simple color distinction for the office block piece was an interesting choice. I think modalities based on intensity works well for qualities of information that are dynamic (e.g. traffic) but as necessary for objective spatial descriptions (e.g. parking). In fact, as a viewer I ended up questioning myself ‘does the thicker purple blob convey the fact that there are more parking spots or not?’ Just because I assumed, as is common knowledge, that the width and length of the blob guarantees more parking space – so why the intensity?

I also noticed how you tried to tweak the more obvious depiction of ‘traffic’ into something unique and original with legends like ‘heavy footage.’ These two things are related but can be used to offer distinct visual information – as we can see in your exercise. I appreciate how you took time to experiment with concepts and methods, which is something that is highly encouraged in this course.

    Thank you!

    1. Chae, thank you for your feedback. It really helps, moving forward with the course. My rationale for the heavier parking was to denote “how many” cars were parked there, or parking density might be a better description. In hindsight, it doesn’t translate well with the heatmap without specific text in the legend, so that’s a good learning point too.
