  1. Hi Jennifer,

First of all, I think you have an intriguing concept in that the experience you’re crafting essentially transforms the site by isolating and removing one of the five traditionally recognized senses from the existing space: sound, or auditory perception. In the case of your two ideas, you’ve either blocked the noises and sounds of a busy intersection or artificially create a new one in its place through user selected white noise. The example images you use suggest a greenhouse atmosphere that preserves evidence of the outside world, in what you describe as a busy intersection in West LA, which is accessed through the operation of sight.

I’m curious to learn more about who inhabits this space and the logistics of how it works. Who are the people utilizing this new contrived area of LA and what does this sound-proof clear glass lobby provide? Where exactly is this housed and how does the scenery affect those who visit? Since this new space blocks outside noise, does it also restrict noise or loud sounds within the interior or is it set up to belie the sounds outside? If a user seated under a lamp gets to choose their desired white noise, how does it affect the auditory selections of those seated around? Are these artificially crafted sounds isolated to one area or do they all intermingle, weaving a new auditory environment? How does this fit within the context of an experience as defined by this project with identifiable start and end points? You’ve intrigued me with your premise and I’d like to know more!

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with!
