Strategy: Frame a view, don’t merely exhibit it.

A designer can achieve more dramatic and rich experiment by carefully farming a view rather than simply providing the view. To achieve dramatic views an Architect will carefully develop the shape, size and determine the place of the window.

  1. The Willis Tower in Chicago came to mind after reading your post, Shirin. It has a SkyDeck Experience, where you go through floors and floors of exhibits, movies, and information displays on your way up to the top. Once there, all the walls are windows, and there is a completely clear box sticking out of the wall that you can stand out in- suspended outside of the building at 1,353 feet up. The whole experience, all the floors and exhibits from below, “frame” the moment to build anticipation for going out on the ledge.

    1. Hi Maria, this was an exciting website you have shared. I felt the sweat on the palm of my hands. I think the designers in the Sky Deck added the excitement to their frame as well. Since one can see the sights and feel that they are hanging from an extremely high place.

  2. The first place I thought of after reading your post is The Restaurant, Cafe and special events space (Matsalen) at the Fotografiska in Stockholm, Sweden. The spaces were built around the view and huge picture windows were installed to maximize the breathtaking beauty. Watching boats and ferries travel between islands, or cruise ships docking nearby, it’s a mesmerizing place to enjoy fika, or afternoon coffee and a pastry.

    1. Michelle, this is certainly seems like a great experience and an opportunity to relax alongside friends and family. I think the people who designed this restaurant, did not just pay attention the scenery but took into account the experiences one can gain from being exposed to them. To me that is why they used this strategy, to show these specific scenes through a window.
