Project 3: Experiences, The Full Bloom Experience by Cindy Wang & Ken Mead

The Full Bloom Experience
Part 3 final here.

Client: Seattle Parks and Recreation
Where: Seattle Green Lake Park
Intervention: “The Full Bloom Experience”

There’s something soothing about slowing down and listening to the patter of the rain, while being shielded from the rain. As you approach the installation, the immense flower or leaf gently unfurls, allowing you to sit at a covered bench.

  1. That seems to be a very soothing and relaxing place. I love the idea of having a shade with a shape of a leaf. The sounds of rain have been used in many meditations since it is a calming sound of nature. To be honest, I would love to see how the final project. I see a lot of creativity and potentials in your design.
I have a few questions for you. How would people use this place when there is no rain? If this is meant to be a relaxing area isn’t chaining lights distracting to others at night?

  2. This reminds me of the Totoro leaf umbrella. There’s a lovely playfulness about this idea that reminds me of great memories in the rain. My feedback is: How are people getting to this place? Are they walking by in the rain with an umbrella? Is this a destination that you want people to come to when it rains? I can’t wait to see the final project.

  3. I really like this idea! There is definitely something to listening to rain, it reminds me of rainy days in Hawaii! I love sitting on the beach while warm rain sprinkles down onto the sand. Based on your description, this is definitely a place I would love to visit to just relax and be in the moment. Are you guys looking into how to design the bench as well? Since reading the book on chairs, I now look at everything I sit on a little bit differently. I wonder if this is a place of conversation where the seats don’t have dividers and you are forced to sit next to someone and start a conversation…or is it a space where people should really be with themselves and there are individual chairs? Really awesome project guys! I can’t wait to see the final presentation!
