Animal Research Security Guidance (for Staff and Students)

Internal Emergency Procedures for Insectaries:

          Inadvertent release of mosquitoes:

The exit door of the insectary is to remain closed at all times except for personnel exiting and entering.  Adult mosquitoes escaping into any of the insectary room should be captured using vacuum aspirators or fine-mesh insect nets.  Alternatively, adults may be killed using swatters or hands after they have landed on the walls.  Clothing (laboratory coats or scrubs) must be examined carefully and brushed off to reveal any escaped mosquitoes before exiting the room.  Escaped larvae (from accidental spills on the floor) are mopped up with paper towels and placed into a container for microwave decontamination.

Other emergencies:

Please use the following guide to notify proper authorities for the following emergencies.  Be prepared to state your name, nature and location of emergency.  Please provide also the phone number 824-5662 of the insectary.1

          Evacuation area
