The Department of Spanish & Portuguese at UC Irvine and UC-Mexicanistas announce the twenty-fourth annual Mexican Studies Conference to be held on April 26-28, 2018. This conference brings together academics from Mexico, the U.S., and other parts of the world who are conducting research on related themes.

At a time when many conversations on Mexican public life focus on forms of political and social violence, representations of the body often depict it as a receptor or propagator of violence. “The Body at its Limits” will provide a forum to address such current representations of the body, while also discussing the various complex, nuanced and perhaps even contradictory ways bodies are represented in Mexican literature, visual cultures, and the arts. We encourage submissions from across disciplines, including but not limited to: literary, visual, media and performance studies, as well as religious studies, history, anthropology, political and social sciences. We are particularly, but not exclusively, interested in papers or panels that address the following themes:

  • Dissident sexualities and gendered bodies
  • The liminal body
  • The body as archive
  • The body and its traces
  • Disembodied subjectivities
  • Absent or disappeared bodies
  • Forms of corporeal violence
  • Memory and embodied knowledge
  • The body and the environment
  • Spectacle, performance and performativity
  • Racialized bodies
  • Commodified and monetized bodies
  • Abject and/or disposable bodies
  • Forms of corporal power and normativity

We will also consider papers or panels that explore other themes in Mexican literature and culture.

Papers should be written in either Spanish or English. Presentations are limited to no more than 20 minutes (8 pages double-spaced). If you are interested in reading an original paper, please submit a 200 word abstract electronically by the deadline of January 16, 2018.
