The deadline for students to submit applications has passed. We are no longer accepting applications for 2024. Please stay tune to our website next year for updates about 2025 applications.

When does the labor summer program begin and end?

Labor Summer runs from Monday, June 17th, 2024 to Friday, August 9th, 2024.

What is orientation?

The first week of the internship will be orientation. June 17th and 18th will be at UC Irvine campus with an exact room TBD and tentative hours from 9am to 5pm.

June Nineteenth (Juneteenth) will be a holiday off. 

June 20th and 21st will be a joint orientation in partnership with UCLA, UCR, UCSD, and UCSB at a location TBD. The labor center will arrange for transportation and overnight stay as necessary. 

The  goal of orientation is to familiarize interns with the labor movement, local social justice campaigns, and host site supervisors. Training will be conducted that is aimed at preparing students various task they may encounter. 

 

Is the internship paid?

Yes, interns will be paid $22.50 per hour

What will my work schedule look like?

Interns will work 5 days and 40 hours per week with no overtime permitted. A typical work week may include some weekends and evenings.

Juneteenth and July 4th will be holidays off.

Can I take any classes during the summer?

No, with one exception. Prof. Parks’s S.E. 195 Summer Session 1 Course

Can I have a part-time job during the program?

No. Labor Summer is a full-time, 40 hour per week commitment with hours that may vary based on need. Any additional commitments would likely conflict with an interns responsibilities.

Who can apply?

Applicants must be undergraduate or Master’s students. Internships are not limited to UC Irvine students. UC Irvine students will have priority. Applicants should have an interest working on social and economic justice issues with community based organization and labor unions. 

Are international students eligible?

If you are an international student, consult the UCI International Student Office about your eligibility to work before applying.

I am graduating spring 2024, can I still apply?

Yes, you are welcomed and encouraged to apply for an internship.

Do I have to be in a certain major or field?

No. Social and economic justice impacts everyone and is not limited to those in select fields.

How do I apply?

Click on the “Apply Here” button on the general Labor Summer information page. Be prepared to upload your resume.

Will there be an interview? When will interviews occur?

Yes. Interview may take place over the phone, in person, or Zoom. Interviews will occur in sometime in March.

When will I be notified if I have been accepted into the program?

We will make final decisions in April and notify applicants as fast as administratively possible. 

Is housing provided?

No. Students are expected to have summer housing arrangments already met. If you are in need of assistance please reach out to the UCI basic needs center.

Is transportation provided?

No, participants are expected to have their transportation to and from their host site and orientation on UC Irvine campus. Some host sites may require interns to travel to worksites, attend meetings, etc.. The host site and intern will arrange a method to accomplish work related travel.

Will remote work be an option?

No. Remote work will not be an option. 

Are the program dates flexible?

No.

Do I get to select where I will work and who is my host site?

Host sites have offices located throughout Orange County. Interns will be assigned to a host based on a number of various factors, including the need of the host organization. We cannot guarantee assignment to any specific organization. During the interview process our goal is to share and receive information that will help us in making the best possible matches. We will take into consideration intern requests, but can not guarantee that all request will be met.
