The LIFT fellowship program at UC Irvine will provide a supportive and team-oriented environment where medical students spend a year conducting basic science, translational, clinical, and educational research. Students will work in multiple locations including the operating room, outpatient clinic, and research laboratories, where they will have the opportunity to practice laparoscopic and robotic skills using trainers in the surgical skills lab.
LIFT fellows will be functioning members of the research team and will participate in weekly lab meetings, didactic lectures, and seminars. Students will also have the opportunity to improve their public speaking skills by giving presentations during lab meetings, urology grand rounds, and several annual urology conferences. Previous fellows have presented at the American Urologic Association (AUA) national meeting, World Congress of Endourology, AUA Western Section meeting, and others. Previous fellows have won multiple awards at these meetings.
During their experience as a LIFT fellow, students are encouraged to apply to the Master’s of Science in Biomedical and Translational Science (MS-BATS) program at UC Irvine. This optional MS degree program offers a unique curriculum aimed at comparative effectiveness research and is led by a world-class faculty who are leaders in their field. The MS-BATS program provides students with the skill set to thrive in the increasingly competitive research environment through courses on medical statistics, bioethics, health care policy, and clinical trial design.
More information on the MS-BATS program is available at their website: http://www.som.uci.edu/graduate-studies/education/ms-bats.asp
