Last year the Libraries Diversity Team hosted two programs on implicit bias, and in 2015 we sponsored a webinar on microaggressions. Understanding these concepts and finding ways to minimize their negative effects in the workplace is vital to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment in the Libraries. As co-chair of the ARL Symposium for Strategic Leadership in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Minneapolis last May, I became acquainted with two librarians who have done research on these topics and whose lived experiences inform their ideas. They are Shamika Dalton, U. Florida Law Librarian, and Michele Villagran, Assistant Professor at the SJSU iSchool. Their interactive session at the Symposium was great, and they have now published a two part set of articles on these topics in the October and November issues of the ACRL journal, College & Research Libraries News. I hope you will check them out.
