RSVP NOW! Confronting Extremism Talks – Wednesday, April 3, 2019

The Office of Inclusive Excellence invites you to join exciting talks by UCI faculty who are Confronting Extremism, 3:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3, in the Little Theatre (161 Humanities Hall and building 601 on the UCI campus map).

If you have not yet submitted your plans to attend, please use the RSVP link at: https://inclusion.uci.edu/. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis, and refreshments and swag bags are available to those submitting responses at the RSVP link.

This event focuses on faculty awardees whose research projects were supported by a Provost Initiative on Understanding and Engaging with Extremism. The speakers offer engaging and brief talks about issues ranging from science denialism to maximizing human rights in the face of extreme narratives.

Speaker biographies and additional details are on the RSVP page and this event is free and open to the public.

Persian Book Festival, 10-4 p.m., Feb. 24 at UC Irvine

The free book festival will feature Persian authors and illustrators and include children’s performances, art and other activities. It is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Feb. 24 at UC Irvine, in collaboration with the Samuel Jordan Center for Persian Studies and Culture.

The UCI Center for Asian Studies invites you to join us for Asian Food Week, a series of events across campus on February 11-15. Asian Food Week highlights the strength of Asian Studies at UCI and features historians and language specialists, Japanese food and Korean noodles, and tea ceremonies from China and Persia and Vietnam.

With faculty, graduate students and courses representing five schools and ten departments across campus, the UCI Center for Asian Studies provides a forum for discussions across the geographic and disciplinary boundaries of Asia both within UCI and in the larger community. We invite you to experience Asian Studies at UCI!

Biennial Iranian Studies Conference

UC is hosting the Twelfth Biennial Iranian Studies Conference from August 14 to 17. Housed under the umbrella of the Association for Iranian Studies, this exciting conference will bring hundreds of scholars, students, academic and non-academic researchers and aficionados of Iranian studies to the University of California, Irvine for a range of scholarly panels, performances, and film screenings. This is the first time the conference will be hosted in Orange County and at UCI.

Event highlights include:

Film screening of “Taq-e Kasra: Wonder of Architecture” (2018), the first-ever documentary film on the world’s largest brick vault, which is a symbol of the Persian Empire in the Sasanian era (224-651 AD). Taq Kasra was in serious danger of ISIS attacks in 2015-2016 and this was the main motivation for documentary maker Pejman Akbarzadeh to film the arch before it was potentially destroyed
Panels on art, photography and literature in Iran, including panels on literary fiction and the family, the history of the literary tradition in Iran, modern poetry and more
Panels on Armenians in Iran, with support from the UCI Armenian Studies Program
Panels on race, diaspora studies, class, gender and culture
Dance performances by Shahrokh Moshkin Ghalam and Gordafari
Performance of Persian classical music by Namad Ensemble
