UCI Libraries Fighting Cancer 2019 edition

Please join Team Libraries as UCI Libraries Fighting Cancer in the UCI Anti-Cancer Challenge for another year. We have already started a team and, yes we want you to join us! Either in physically or in spirit.

We are joining in the fight against cancer in two ways: first to raise funds that go 100% towards cancer research, and two by promoting health with walking, running, biking, or volunteering, along with community support.

Visit the 2019 team wiki site that has up-to-date information, along with photos and a few testimonials from some of last year participants. In the works are training activity and other cool stuff, all will be posted on the wiki.

The day of the event is Saturday, June 8 here at the UCI campus in Aldrich Park.

Free Group Hikes in Sept.

Campus recreation is hosting a couple of free group hikes in September. The first one is the 10th, Monday evening from 6-8pm hiking Shady Canyon.

register here  (so far only 7 people have signed up!)

 

The second hike is on Saturday the 29th from 10am to 1pm with a hike starting in Bomber Canyon.

This is a great hike close to campus with beautiful views of the coast! We will hike from Bomber Canyon over to the coast in El Moro canyon, stop for a treat at the Milkshake Shack and then return to campus.

UCI Libraries Fighting Cancer Team Success

We had a great time at the Anti-Cancer Challenge Event this past Saturday, May 19th that took place at The Orange County Great Park in Irvine.

Our team: UCI Libraries Fighting Cancer comprised of 11 members, with eleven walkers and one volunteer.

We surpassed our fund raising goal of $500 by raising $650. Thanks to generous support of our donors Paul Caldera and Lorelei Tanji.

UCI Libraries Fighting Cancer Team – UCI Anti-Cancer Challenge Update

There’s still time to join with UCI Libraries Fighting Cancer Team for the 5K walk/run or bike challenge event. We have two more weeks before the day of the festival at Orange County Great Park in Irvine. So far we have raised $350 and the members of team are planning on participating in the 5K walk.

Our team currently has 8 members including family members and:

Yes, your family or friends can join you too.

The day of the event will be packed with activities with live entertainment, free food, awards, and mascot Wild Wing from the Anaheim Ducks will be onsite for photos.

Maybe you’ve seen the flyers or an email or two about the new summer challenge from campus wellness, called “Take a Break” or Rest and Revive Challenge . Did you also know about the free 1 hour yoga classes? What about the discounted 50 minute massage? Or the other free classes?

The 6-week challenge started this week and continues until August 18. (The massage discount is good until September 10, 2017.)  If you missed any of the Challenge Kick-Off Webinar Series recordings, you can still access them and listen in on the challenge website page, just click and listen. 🙂

Bystander Intervention Training

The Diversity Team and Library Human Resources is hosting the Bystander Intervention Training that is taking place on February 22 at 9am to 11am in Langson Library 570.

During this training, Dr. Negar Shekarabi* and Dr. Kanwar Pahwa** will present ways to be proactive in helping people in distress, and how to be an ally to victims of microaggressions.

All library employees are welcome and encourage to attend.

*Dr. Negar Shekarabi is the Interim Coordinator for the UCI Faculty & Staff Mental Health Care & Respondent Services.

Inclusive Excellence Town Hall Meeting

The Office of Inclusive Excellence is hosting a town hall meeting tomorrow at noon. If you are able to attend please do so.

The meeting is to promote our campus as a diverse and inclusive community.

This is a brown bag event, but light refreshments will be provided
