I just read a fascinating article by UCI Associate Professor of Literary Journalism, Erika Hayasaki, called The Pathology of Prejudice: what neuroscience tells us about the persistence of hatred. The article appears in the December issue of The New Republic. Professor Hayasaki tells the story of two women — one who had become a committed member of the KKK as young adult, and the other who joined a neo-Nazi skinhead gang at 15. Eventually they both left their racist pasts behind and are now active members of the nonprofit group, Life After Hate. The article also talks about scientific studies that show why it is difficult but not impossible to change one’s brain and reject racism.
