Latinos in Science and Engineering (MAES)

MAES (Latinos in Science and Engineering) is a student-led organization dedicated to creating a home away from home for anyone interested in growing academically, professionally, and socially, regardless of background or major. We emphasize familia by having a supportive community built on mentorship, connection, and shared success. MAES serves underserved communities through volunteer work at local elementary schools and food banks, and through our mentor–mentee program, MAEStros, where members can grow as both mentors and mentees. We host biweekly general meetings and social events that are open to all at any time. In addition, MAES provides professional development through research workshops, industry networking events, and opportunities to attend annual conferences that help members secure internships and build meaningful career pathways.

National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE)

The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) at UC Irvine is part of a national student-led organization founded in 1975 at Purdue University, which has grown from six students to over 18,000 members across more than 500 chapters. The University of California, Irvine NSBE chapter continues this legacy by fostering a supportive community for Black engineers and STEM students on campus. We are committed to NSBE’s mission “to increase the number of culturally responsible Black Engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community,” and we work toward this through academic support, technical development, leadership opportunities, and community engagement. At UC Irvine, we host professional development events and invite industry representatives from companies such as Medtronic, Boeing, Parker Aerospace, and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power to provide insight into internships, full-time roles, and navigating careers in engineering. Our members also have the opportunity to attend regional and national NSBE conventions, where they network with top STEM companies, meet other Black engineers, and explore graduate and research opportunities. Above all, NSBE at UC Irvine is dedicated to empowering its members, strengthening community, and creating pathways for success. For more information, please contact us at ucirvinensbe@gmail.com

Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE)

Who We Are – SHPE stands for the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. We are simply one chapter of a greater national organization with both student (high school, university) and professional (LADWP, Orange County/Inland Empire) chapters spread across seven regions in all 50 states and Puerto Rico! SHPE provides a social and industry network for emerging academics and professionals, complete with access to an annual National Convention for internship, graduate school, and employment opportunities oriented for Latinos.

What We Do – SHPE at UC Irvine provides a welcoming space for Latinos in STEM, granting minority students both the direction and ambition to become successful in their careers. In our organization, members can come together for professional general meetings every odd week and social opportunities every even week. Moreover, members can benefit from our Professional and Tech Committees, teaching fundamental networking and engineering skills, and SHPEtinas Committee, ensuring our Latina members feel welcome and capable. Beyond that, SHPE at UC Irvine has an active Outreach program, meant to connect with local youth in Santa Ana as mentors, and promotes intramural teams in soccer, basketball, and volleyball. Additionally, SHPE at UCI hosts several opportunities meant to support the Latino community, with regular fundraisers oriented around Latin-American cuisine and an intern program meant to introduce younger members into leadership positions.
