Larry Cooperman, Associate Dean for Open Education at UCI, was re-appointed to the board of directors of the African Virtual University this July. He joins a board that consists of vice-chancellors and rectors elected by a General Assembly of 35 partner universities across the five regions of the African continent. The board continues under the chairmanship of Professor Rogerio Uthui, Rector of the Universidade Pedagogica in Mozambique. Under the leadership of its longtime rector, Dr. Bakary Diallo, the AVU has a significant OER project, runs two multinational curriculum projects in teacher education and computer science, supports a network of distance learning centers, and is launching its second MOOC. According to Cooperman, “The AVU clearly fosters the expansion of higher education throughout the African continent to support economic and human development.”
