Teaching Philosophies and Evaluations
My commitment as a teacher is to provide an accessible and supportive learning environment where students can develop and hone critical thinking aptitudes that will assist their growth into bold, independent thinkers and informed members of society. Thus, my guiding principles as an educator revolve around creating inclusive, integrated learning environments with three main teaching philosophies.
Firstly, I foster students’ ability to think critically and creatively enabling them to interpret and synthesize disseminated science, including academic journals and popular media. As a student commented:
Her strengths were having the students go into breakout rooms through zoom so that they can discuss with each other the problems on the worksheet. She also had us think on our own why the answer choice we picked was the right one so that we wouldn’t just have the answers given to us. She made us work just like how we’re supposed to and that’s what her strength was, making the students work on their own to develop better thinking skills
Secondly, my teaching is student-centered, meaning that I tailor my instruction to scaffold different students’ needs based on where they are at. Relatedly, I provide students with effective and timely feedback. As my students commented:
Pin-Chun was really good at getting through the material in a concise and clear way. She gave us opportunities to speak our minds in class, and discussed any points we had during lecture that we were confused about. She went in depth with some of the topics and helping us connect them with life-relevant examples.
She gave out really clear and organized instructions. I can tell that she wants everyone from the class to understand the material and do well in the class. She is a really nice person, easy to communicate and reach. One of the best TA at UCI!
Lastly, I value approachable and effective communication with students. As my students commented:
She is very welcoming and approachable, which made me unafraid to ask her for help. She is very knowledgeable about the subject matter and was very communicative and responsive, both in and outside of class. Pin Chun was willing to discuss her research with us, which was very interesting to hear about and valuable information in assessing my own interests.
Pin-Chun is a great TA. Literally the BEST TA I’ve ever had. She is extremely helpful, replies to questions through emails with no delay, and is very knowledgable about all the topics. She is awesome.
