Mission Statement
The UC Irvine Police Accountability Board (PAB) aims to develop accountability, trust, and communication between the UC Irvine Police (UCI PD) and campus community. To maintain an unbiased approach, the independent board is composed of students, staff, faculty, and University Hills residents— no police are on the board. The PAB provides recommendations to the Chief of Police and the Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity (OEOD) about procedures and complaints regarding UCI PD and the conduct of UCI PD personnel.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who can file a complaint or provide feedback?
Anyone may file a complaint if they were affected by UCI PD. You do not have to be a student, staff, faculty, or resident. You do not have to be a U.S. Citizen. If you are a caretaker or a legal guardian, you may file the form on their behalf, but please indicate as such on the form. Anyone may fill out the feedback form.
What kind of complaints can I file?
On the complaint form, you have the ability to make charges about any of the following:
- Improper arrest, search, seizure or stop
- Improper or inadequate investigation
- Improper detention procedure
- Improper police procedures
- Excessive force
- Discrimination
- Harassment
- Discourtesy
If you are unsure, it is no worries. The PAB will make the ultimate decision about which charges apply.
What if I want to file a complaint about a civilian (not a police officer)?
This form is intended for use by those who wish to file a complaint against a UC Irvine Police Officer(s) for misconduct and who seek formal responses from the independent Police Accountability Board.
If you are experiencing an emergency, please call 9-1-1. If you wish to file a complaint against a civilian, please call the UCI PD non-emergency line at (949) 824-5223 or view their reporting crime page.
Who sees complaints?
Complaints are sent to the UCI Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity (OEOD) and the UCI PD Chief of Police. They are then sent to the PAB Board members who are listed below. Complaints are held by the UCI PD servers for 5 years.
Should I file a complaint?
Yes. Complaints and feedback from the community are important to us. Without community input, the University may not be aware of police misconduct and thus cannot take action to address it. So, while you are not required to make a complaint or offer feedback, it is appreciated and can lead to updated policies.
What kind of things can I write in the feedback form?
The feedback form is for suggestions about how the PAB should run, suggestions for changing UCI PD procedures, or feedback on our cases/ events/ website. You are welcome to submit any feedback anonymously.
How can I contact the PAB, like if I have a question?
You may file our feedback form or email inclusion@uci.edu.
How can I join the PAB?
Members serve 3 year terms and are nominated by the following: ASUCI, AGS, the Dean of the School of Medicine, the Academic Senate (2), the UCI Staff Assembly, the CEO of the UCI Health Administration, the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, and the Homeowners’ Representatives Board. To be on the PAB, please reach out to each individual body to see when their nomination process begins. Terms start in 2023, so the application process will likely re-open every 3 years thereafter, unless there is a vacancy. Students serve 1 year terms with the possibility of renewal. Members must also be current UCI affiliated members and meet other criteria as stated in the bylaws.
Where can I find the data and reports?
In our navigation bar or at this link. We will update the case database regularly as we process cases. The annual report will be produced by each summer, starting in 2024.
