Communication Tips

Communication is going to be key to your success as a remote learner. Here are some tips to help make sure you’re staying on track.

  • Check Your Email: Check your UCI email at least at least twice – in the morning and at the end of the day. Email is an important component of course communication, so check as often as you can.
  • Check Your Canvas Notifications: Monitor your Canvas announcements regularly.
  • Zoom into Study Groups: Use Zoom to set-up times to study with other students.
  • Know Class Communication Policies: Each class will have its own communication policy, be sure to check the syllabus for your instructor’s guidelines.

Class Tips

Each class you take will be unique, but these tips should help you in all of them.

  • Read Your Syllabus Carefully: Policies for classes will differ, never assume something that applies in one class will be true for another.
  • Verify Class Meeting Times: If your class will have synchronous (real time) instruction, be sure you know the correct days and times (especially if you’re in another timezone).
  • Understand Course Delivery: Class activities may be asynchronous, (not performed in real time), or synchronous, (performed real time on a designated platform). Especially for lab and discussion sections, make sure you understand how to participate fully in your classes.

Study Space Tips

Your study space is important for your ability to concentrate, participate, and complete your work successfully.

  • Aim For Consistency: If possible, find a space that you can use consistently when attending classes and studying.
  • Optimize Your Space: Your study space should have access to reliable internet and electric outlets for charging your equipment. A comfortable chair is also important. Being able to spread out your books and materials as needed, even if just while studying, would be helpful. And make sure this space has good lighting.
  • Minimize Distractions: Not all distractions will be ones you can control. However, we recommend you disable notification on your phone during class and study time, use headphones when participating in Zoom meetings, and let any family members clearly know when you’ll be unavailable due to school work.
  • Organize Your Space: Where possible, keep your study space organized and clutter-free. This will help with focus and reduce energy drain.
  • Wellness: Keep a glass of water handy and make sure to get up and walk around often.
