About Us
The purpose of this group is to create a space for graduate students and faculty doing qualitative research to present their working papers. Papers will be circulated a week before each meeting. There will be no presentation of the work, instead the meeting time will be devoted to providing feedback. Each participant is expected to read the paper in advance and provide feedback. We will typically meet on Fridays at noon, unless otherwise noted.
Expectations
The purpose of this workshop is to provide a space for students and faculty members to circulate their working qualitative manuscripts to other sociologists, learn how to provide effective feedback, and help presenters synthesize the feedback given as is customary during the journal review process.

Read
Perhaps the most important expectation is that you read the paper(s) ahead of time. This space only works if everyone reads and prepares clear and constructive questions or comments for the authors.
Contribute
Prepare at least one question or piece of feedback for the author. Your feedback/question can be theoretical, methodological, or can ask the author to elaborate/extend/expand on their work. Please do not ask yes/no questions. The best questions help the author move their argument forward.
Engage
Please arrive on time and stay for the entire two-hour session. This is key to establishing a respectful and productive environment for all and will set us up for deep engagement.
Reciprocate
This space will work best if everyone commits to attending regularly. Our hope is that we have a cadre of regular attendees.
Respect
Sharing work-in-progress can be difficult. Do not share the work outside of this space without the author’s expressed permission. We will share ideas, and give credit where credit is due.
