A Conference organized by the UCI Center for Early Cultures and The New Swan Shakespeare Center

April 29-30 & May 1, 2021

Please refer to the Schedule tab for recordings from the conference!

Sea Sense will focus on the narrative and representational aspects of early modern land/sea distinctions and the environmental concerns these distinctions foreground. The conference will explore the allegorical and rhetorical role oceans play in early modern conceptions of environmental catastrophe, and the limits and possibilities that oceans presented for thinking with ecocriticism in a deep historical context.

This three-day history and history of art event will include roundtable discussions, special lectures, and a graduate student conference.

Keynote presentations will be given each day of the conference.
