Adobe has released updated versions of Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat that fix critical security issues that affect Windows and Macintosh systems. These critical security issues could cause the application to crash and potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system.
For Macintosh systems, two different versions of the updates are available dependent upon the currently installed version of Acrobat or Reader installed. These updated versions are Acrobat and Reader X (10.0.3) or Acrobat and Reader 9.4.4.
For Windows systems, two different versions of the update for Acrobat are available dependent upon the currently installed version of Acrobat installed. These updated versions are Acrobat X (10.0.3) and Acrobat 9.4.4.
For Windows systems, only one update is available for Reader, the updated version is 9.4.4.
NOTE 1: Because Adobe Reader X Protected Mode (for Windows) would prevent an exploit of this kind from executing, Adobe is planning to address this issue in Adobe Reader X for Windows with the next quarterly security update for Adobe Reader, currently scheduled for June 14, 2011.
NOTE 2: Adobe Reader 9.x for Android is not affected by this issue.
