Dear Space, Time, and Orange County,

This past Saturday we spent the day with some champions of Irvine, the community that surrounds UCI, each representing specific elite and institutional positions: home owners associations, professional lobby groupslocal government and its associated technocracy. This coming Wednesday we will shift towards the individual, the idiosyncratic, and the explicitly artistic, in the form of two projects by local heroes that, each in their own way, have been representing the underrepresented.

3:30PM: UCI Farm with Anna  Kryczka

We will meet Anna in front of the UCI ARC and walk from there to the farm.

Attached is the introduction from Learning by Doing at the Farm, Anna and Robert Kett’s exhibition and publication project on the Farm. Buy the book! Highly recommended! I have one copy that I’ll bring with me on Wednesday.

Anna has also provided us with a copy of Ollero Yucateco, a film produced by one of the Farm faculty members on one of the visiting experts’ pottery techniques. (This one’s for you, Ian.)

Lastly, Anna would like you to watch Birth of a Campus as a counterpoint. Steve MacLeod showed us a clip from this film on our first day.

5:00PM: Unconfirmed Makeshift Museum with Mariángeles Soto-Díaz

Local artist, UCI Department of Art faculty member and University Hills resident Mariángeles Soto-Díaz has generously opened up her home and the Unconfirmed Makeshift Museum for us as a location for reflection and discussion. This will be our final discursive step towards your own intervention proposals.

Please review the UMM website, and be prepared to discuss your own ideas.

Mariángeles has also provided us with a video interview that addresses her curatorial project on notions of universality in relation to Latin American abstraction. This helps position her practice more generally. Please do not distribute this link, as it is a work in progress.

6:30PM: Small Group and Individual Meetings

I am available for further small group discussion and individual meetings subsequent to our visit to the UMM. If necessary, I can also be available on Thursday.

See you tomorrow,

–Jesse
