What’s unique about South African history?

In anticipation of our first class meeting, I’m posing some questions to get you thinking about the next ten weeks.

  • What is history?
  • When does “history” start? Is that answer different in South Africa compared to the US?
  • What is gender?
  • What do you already know about South Africa? (It’s fine if your answer is “not much.”)
  • What opinions do you have about Apartheid?

  1. History is a collective study of people, places, culture, and economics that attempts to detail their time of existence and their contributions to the world. I am not sure when history started but I believe each country has it’s own history therefore South Africa’s history would certainly be different than the history of the United States.
I know that South Africa is a rich continent that was invaded by whites to control the natives’ wealth and prevent Black South Africans from thriving. They achieved this under the rhetoric of Apartheid which was encouraged segregation, discrimination and oppression towards Blacks.
