Taffard is currently recruiting graduate and undergraduate students interested in research in High Energy Physics with the ATLAS experiment. The UCI ATLAS group collaborated with many other international groups working on ATLAS. The UCI group is deeply involved in the maintenance and operation of the ATLAS detector, the ATLAS upgrade program and physics analyses, currently focusing on search for new physics. Students will develop many practical skillsets including analyzing large dataset, statistical analysis, programming (C, C++, python, HDL, Bash scripting, Latex, ROOT), using Monte Carlo generators, designing and building hardware with FPGA; using machine learning to improve analyses sensitivity to new physics or algorithm performances, and becoming experts in scientific and high performance computing using world wide resources such as the LHC computing Grid.
The Department of Physics & Astronomy at University of California, Irvine is a top-ranked program with a strong and historic focus on Particle Physics physics (Frederick Reines was recipient of the Nobel prize in 1995 for detection of the neutrino). The modern campus is conveniently located in Orange County, California, within driving distance to Los Angeles, the Santa Ana Mountains, and is just minutes from the beach. Graduate student stipends are competitive, and family housing options are available.
