UCI Stories exhibit opens Monday, May 23

May 20, 2016 by Christine Deborah Kim 1 Comment

Ready for 50+ anteater antics told through conversations between former and current anteaters? Zot zot! Anteaters come together to share memories, events, and changes throughout UC Irvine’s 50 years of history.

The UCI Libraries announce the opening of an exciting new exhibit called UCI Stories: 50th Anniversary Oral History Project, on Monday, May 23rd at 6:30PM in Langson Library, UCI. RSVP here: http://partners.lib.uci.edu/ucistories/rsvp

UCI Stories

Inspired and imprinted with words spoken during the filmed oral histories, UCI Stories highlights the bright past and brilliant future of UCI through the memories, reflections, and predictions of its community. Artfully curated quotes of campus leaders, innovators, alumni, faculty and staff, document how over the past 50 years, UCI has given birth to generations of community-oriented difference-makers driven by a pioneering spirit that has permeated the campus long before a physical building ever stood on the land. UCI Stories captures how this spirit glues UCI together, and often after graduation calls Anteaters back home. Every great story has three main parts: characters with whom you can identify, a memorable and imaginable setting, and a plot based on the unexpected experiences of protagonists. This is UCI Stories.

Opening night speakers are Robert Cohen (UCI Claire Trevor Professor of Drama, Emeritus/Founding Faculty), Jenny Doh ’91 (UCI’s First Student Regent/Past President, UCI Alumni Association), Elizabeth Toomey (Daughter of Founding Chancellor Aldrich/Retired UCI Assistant Vice Chancellor, Community and Government Relations), and Joseph L. White (UCI Professor Emeritus of Psychology and Psychiatry), will engage in a fascinating conversation on UCI’s history and thoughts for the future; with panel moderation by Krystal Tribbett, UCI Libraries 50th Anniversary Project Historian.

The program will be followed by a light reception and exhibit viewing in Langson Library, UCI. The event is free and open to the public. Space is limited; reservations are first come, first served.

The UCI Stories Project is a unique oral history project, launched by UCI Libraries, that pairs over 100 UCI affiliates for dynamic conversations to commemorate UCI’s 50th Anniversary. The reminiscences collected offer first-hand perspectives that tell the multifaceted story of UCI’s intellectual contributions, key turning points, and unique legacy. The UCI Libraries’ 50th Anniversary Exhibit, “UCI Stories” is a product of this effort.

Raymond L. Watson born digital files and digitized slides, 1992-2010

June 8, 2012 by Steve MacLeod Leave a Comment

Raymond L. Watson (1926-) is an architect and planner and former President and CEO of The Irvine Company. With the exception of the years 1977 to 1983, Watson served in various capacities at The Irvine Company beginning in 1960 until his retirement in 2003.

Included in this collection are electronic word-processing files, created between 1992 and 2010, and digitized slides, created in 1996 and 1997. The born digital files were received via email and converted to PDF format in order to facilitate preservation and access. The digitized slides were received on five photographic CDs and were converted into JPEGs, also to facilitate preservation and access.

The born digital files include writings by Watson pertaining to Irvine Company developments in Orange County, California; the planning of the University of California, Irvine and the City of Irvine; city planning; community planning; and planned communities. Also included are reports and writings not authored by Watson that primarily relate to urban planning and design.

The digitized slides contain images documenting Irvine Company developments in Orange County, California; the Irvine Ranch and the Irvine family; and the planning and development of areas within Orange County. Included are aerial, exterior, interior, and plan views, as well as copy prints of schematic drawings, plans, maps, and several photographic portraits.

The born digital files and digitized slides are part of the larger collection, the Raymond L. Watson Papers (MS-120), which are described in a finding aid in the Online Archive of California. Access to the non-digital materials is provided in the Special Collections and Archives Reading Room at the U.C. Irvine Libraries.

More information about the collection and how to search the collection is available here.

Raymond L. Watson Papers

November 1, 2010 by Steve MacLeod Leave a Comment

Ray Watson (front right) -- ca. 1964

The Raymond L. Watson Papers (MS-R120) add significantly to our already very strong collections pertaining to planning for UCI and the City of Irvine, as well as environmental and conservation efforts in Orange County, and urban planning generally. The collection has been recently processed and a finding aid is now available via the Online Archive of California. The collection comprises the extant files of Raymond L. Watson, former president and CEO of the Irvine Company. Included in the collection are Watson’s speeches, correspondence, and writings; Irvine company records, publications, and reports; topical files relating to the Irvine Company, the Irvine Ranch, the City of Irvine, The University of California, Irvine, and Orange County (including Upper Newport Bay); and professional files on topics such as urban planning, housing, and new towns. Of particular interest are Watson’s own writings on community development and the City of Irvine.

Raymond Watson, former president of The Irvine Company, began his career with The Irvine Company in September 1960. With the exception of the years 1977 to 1983, Watson has been involved continuously with the company in various capacities.  With landholdings encompassing over 90,000 acres, The Irvine Company’s origins date to 1864, when James Irvine I established the Irvine Ranch upon acquiring 185 square miles of Mexican and Spanish land grants. His son, James Irvine II, incorporated the holdings in 1894, founding The Irvine Company.  Born in Seattle, Washington, on October 4, 1926, Raymond Watson was raised in Oakland, CA, and attended UC Berkeley, where he received a B.A. in Architecture in 1951 and a M.A. in Architecture in 1953. Stan Ott, planning director of the City of Stockton, CA, gave Watson his first job, planning a civic center for the City. In 1960, Ott, who then worked at The Irvine Company, hired Watson to be the first manager of planning. In that role, Watson was instrumental in the early years of development of the Irvine Ranch and the City of Irvine.  Under his guidance, the City of Irvine became a model planned community, with award-winning housing developments such as Woodbridge and Westpark, complemented by the city’s many parks, trails, open spaces and commercial developments.

Ray Watson and UCI grad student Erit Maor. Erit is assisting the curator of the spring 2011 exhibit "Irvine: the Vision, the Plan, the Promise."

Watson moved up the ranks through various vice president positions, and in 1973 was named president and CEO, positions he held until his resignation in 1977. From 1983 to 2004, Watson was a member of the board at Walt Disney Company, serving as its chairman from 1983 to 1984. In September 1986, he rejoined The Irvine Company as vice chairman until his retirement in 2003. As of 2006, he remains a member of the board. As a tribute to Watson’s many years of service to the City of Irvine, the bridge connecting the UC Irvine campus to the University Center across Campus Drive was named the “Raymond L. Watson Bridge” in October 2005.

The spring 2011 exhibit in Langson Library, “Irvine: the Vision, the Plan, the Promise,” will include materials from the Raymond L. Watson Papers (MS-R120).  During the opening program on May 11, there will be a special tribute to Mr. Watson to honor his generous gift to establish the Raymond L. Watson Library Fund in support of the preservation and growth of the Libraries’ collections on the planning and development of the City of Irvine, the UCI campus, and surrounding communities in Orange County. The exhibit curator is Yvonne Wilson, UCI Research Librarian for California and Orange County Government Information. Assisting her is Erit Maor, graduate student in the UCI School of Social Ecology’s Department of Planning, Policy and Design.
