This website showcases the work of 28 students who took the Spring 2023 online, college course “Veterans in History and Society” (A Sociology and History Course) taught by Dr. Mariana Grohowkski, at the University of California, Irvine. Specifically, this site shares students’ semester-long projects: Audio tours of military, war, veteran monuments/memorials in their communities.
Audio tours are short (5 minutes or less) audio-recorded tutorials of a physical, geographic area of interest. The areas of interest showcased here are dedicated military, war, or veteran monuments and memorials. For more details about the nature of this assignment, see Grohowski (2022) and Anderson (2016).
Thank you for engaging with the 28 audio tours featured here. All 28 students gave their written consent to have their work published on this site. Out of the 28 audio tours, there are a total of 15 original sites explored; you will quickly notice that several students visited the same site. This is not a weakness but a strength, as each student gave a unique tour based on their perspective and positionality.
The sites toured are mostly located in southern California, with one exception: one tour was conducted in Austin, Texas.
Enjoy!
