[Research Opportunities] Bio Sci 199/198/197 & PH199/195W Undergraduate Research
Job Description
This course is an opportunity for undergraduate students to perform supervised undergraduate research alongside a mentor while getting graded units in research. Supervised individual research under the guidance of a faculty mentor and supervisor. Culminating report/thesis required. A maximum of 5 units of can be applied toward the major. Students are expected to be working on the project for 3-4 hours a week for each course unit. Individual contract required. Letter grading.
Course Requirements
- Research Project: Each student will work with both a faculty mentor and sub-supervisor for an individual benchside research project. You may team up with another one or two students for the project.
- Project Report: The final assignment consists of a written project summary report and an e-poster. The instructions will be provided in the 5th week of each quarter.
- General Lab Preparation: Students will be involved with general lab preparations, including tip filling and reagent preparation, assigned by the faculty mentor and course assistant.

[Research Opportunities] PH195W Undergraduate Practicum

Internship Description
This practicum internship will provide an opportunity for undergraduate students to perform supervised research alongside a mentor while getting credits in research. Mentored research is conducted under the guidance of a faculty mentor and a supervisor. Practicum students will first be given training including literature reading, research presentation, and basic molecular biology techniques. Once the required techniques and knowledge are mastered, students will, under an advisor, participate in research projects in epidemiology and/or vector biology. From the time the students enter the lab to when they leave, the students will be working alongside or supervised closely by their advisors.
Students will have a weekly schedule involving a variety of tasks including but not limited to the literature review, research and paper presentation, sample preparation, inventory, and processing with molecular techniques.
This internship will practice students’ scientific thinking and hands-on skills, and orientate the students to potential careers in public health, molecular biology, vector biology, and epidemiology.
Preferred Skills
Students who are highly motivated, dedicated with excellent organization, time management, and communication skills are encouraged.
The internship is recommended for students who have established basic biology and chemistry knowledge.
** Please note a minimum of a two-quarter commitment is required: at least one quarter of PH199 or BIO199 before the practicum.
