Climate Change Statement

Summary:
The Student Chapter of the American Meteorological Society at UCI (zotCAMS) affirms our commitment to provide educational resources on how and why Earth’s climate is changing. We agree with the international scientific consensus that human activities are responsible for Earth’s climate warming. Without a dramatic reduction in future greenhouse gas emissions, harmful impacts will threaten society, ecosystems, and biodiversity.

Official Statement:
The Student Chapter of the American Meteorological Society at UCI (zotCAMS) affirms our commitment to provide educational resources on how and why Earth’s climate is changing.

The current officers of zotCAMS agree with the following scientific conclusions:

  1. In agreement with an international scientific consensus and the most recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) assessment (AR5), it is extremely likely that approximately 100% of the observed global temperature increase since 1950 was caused by human activities. Internal (natural) variability factors, such as solar activity, low-frequency variability, volcanic activity, and atmospheric/oceanic cycles, cannot explain the current rate of climate warming.
  2. State of the art climate models project an increase of 2.7°F to 7°F (relative to 1986-2005) in the average global surface air temperature by 2100. The amount of future warming is largely dependent on the magnitude of greenhouse gas emissions and land-use changes.
  3. While uncertainties remain in future Earth system model projections, some degree of harmful impact from climate change is inevitable. These adverse societal and ecological regional impacts will only worsen under higher future greenhouse gas emissions. Evidence-based national and international policy decisions will help determine the magnitude of future climate warming and its associated impacts.
