In 1996, in the wake of Propositions 187 and 209, UCI became the first UC campus to establish a Center for Educational Partnerships (CFEP). CFEP’s mission is to increase preparation for and success in higher education for first generation, low-income and underrepresented students. CFEP institutionalized the university’s commitment to the quality of public education and equity and access in higher education. The Center works directly with teachers, students and schools to provide academic preparation, teacher professional development, college-going information. Since its inception, the CFEP has become a model in the University of California system and has, to date, generated over $50 million in extramural resources. The Center innovates and administers over 20 programs that span the K-16 pipeline and serve 20,000 students, 3,000 teachers and 3,500 parents annually.
