Doreen Hii

I aim to identify the fundamental ingredients to human cognition, and in understanding, build an artificial replica.

I am currently a graduate researcher at UCI Visual Perception Lab, with Dr. Zygmunt Pizlo. My current work focuses on (1) studying the computational advantages made possible by the peculiar neurobiological structure of human visual system [Check out my Poster and Modeling Results], and (2) uncovering the governing law of perception to derive the “equations of motions” of perception [Check out the project website].

During my undergraduate years, I have investigated the important ingredients of human cognition from the perspective of human language processing. I studied the role of context in determining the interpretation of negation, as well as compared linguistic generalization techniques used by deep neural networks against that by humans. Visit the Research page for more details.

On the opposite side of the campus, I spent three years as a Junior Specialist and Student Researcher at UCI MicroSystems Laboratory under the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Visit my Ideas page to find out the connection I try to make between mechanical sensors and cognitive sciences.
