Happy 90th Birthday, Chancellor Peltason!

August 30, 2013 by quezadad

To celebrate Chancellor Jack Peltason’s 90th birthday, we present a photo gallery to present the myriad spectacles* with the good fortune to don this accomplished man’s face:

As a treat, here’s Chancellor Peltason, on the rare occasion he is without glasses!

Chancellor Peltason, sans spectacles: a truly exceptional exception.

UCI’s second chancellor, Jack Peltason, is accomplished miles beyond his instinct for stylish rims. Visit Anteater Chronicles to read about his decorated career, or to learn more about the history of UCI, visit the Online Archive of UCI History.

*Special Collections and Archives (of the UCI Libraries) is no expert on glasses. Duplicate frames may be present in this gallery.

Lunch with Robert Cohen!

August 22, 2013 by quezadad

Honorary Artistic Director of the New Swan Shakespeare Festival and Professor of Acting, Robert Cohen, presented a lunchtime talk on ‘Acting in Shakespeare’ in the New Swan Theater!

His talk was so fascinating, that we decided to find some photos of Prof. Cohen in action.

Special Collections and Archives has the Robert Cohen Papers [MS-P069], which comprises fifty-three production books! These books include scripts, reviews, photographs and stage directions, which document Cohen’s work as director for theater productions at UCI and the Utah and Colorado Shakespeare Festivals.

We found that Prof. Cohen is, literally and figuratively, a man of many hats.

Robert Cohen is the founding chair of the University of California, Irvine Drama Department and a renowned professor, director, translator, playwright, essayist, and drama critic. In 2001 he was named Claire Trevor Professor of Drama at UCI.

The UCI Greenhouse

August 1, 2013 by quezadad

Have you ever wondered what the greenhouse across from Founders’ Court is for? Well, we did a little digging in the University Archives and discovered that planning for the greenhouse started in 1965. It was initially called the Headhouse-Greenhouse because there are both a growth area and researcher facilities there. The UCI Greenhouse is a 9,000 square foot growth facility, in support of instruction and research in the Biological Sciences. Below are early photographs of the Greenhouse being built.
